The resort town of Toulon lies on the Mediterranean coast of France around 20 miles away from the large city of Marseille. Offering one of the most stunning locations for a beach holiday imaginable, Toulon has perfect beaches, glorious weather, and some stunning attractions on offer.
There are a number of historic churches in and around the old town of Toulon, in particular the church of St Marie de la Mare where there were some utterly amazing stained glass windows portraying the passion scenes from the Gospel of St Matthew. The windows were completed in the 17th century, and were described as being so beautiful, that the women of the city were not permitted to look at them for almost a hundred years for fear that they would be blinded. The best time to see the windows was at dawn. The moment of sunrise saw a rainbow of colour projected into the church through the main rose window in the east transept. This miraculous dance of colours projected an illusion onto the floor so intricate that Peter's betrayal of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane was played out around you. Sadly, local teenager Bertrand de la Molliere threw bricks through the windows in 1997 destroying them all. The repairs were deemed to be too expensive, and consequently, the windows were replaced with plastic sheets. Molliere now plays football for local side Toulon Majestique, and scored 47 goals in the 2004-5 season.
