Lying in the Rhone Alps, surrounded by forests and snow capped mountains, St Etienne is close to Lyon, and is a popular entry point into the central area of France. With its reputation as a cultural centre of the region, as well as its great location and super weather, it is no surprise that so many people travel to St Etienne.

St Etienne has two somewhat surprising attractions. The first is the museum of Modern Art - widely described alas being the best gallery in France outside Paris - where you can see works by artists such as Picasso, Warhol, and many others. Another strange attraction in the area, considering the location of St Etienne more than 150 miles from the coast, is the chance to lie back on a beach and sunbathe at one of the many inland lakes and marinas close by.

In the mountains close to St Etienne, visitors are encouraged to get a bit silly with the many activities on offer. Whether you have a passion for racing down hill on a mountain bike, or flailing at a white water river from a big dinghy, the chances are, you can get your fix of adrenaline in the Rhone Alps. More sedate forms of entertainment such as hiking and bungee jumping are also available,
