The most famous export of this pleasant Provence city north of Montpellier is the serge cotton fabric that was originally woven here: Denim. Nimes has a truly exceptional location inland from the coast and close to the important towns of Avignon, Arles and Montpellier in the centre of some of the most beautiful countryside in France.
Amongst the many attractions that are on offer for visitors to Nimes, perhaps the most important culturally are the many churches and museums that seem to populate the streets. Nimes' medieval streets positively reek of the past, and it is easy to lose yourself for a day or two as you explore the many stunning sights that are on offer.
Amongst the most important cities in Provence, Nimes offers visitors the chance to escape from the modern world into a bygone time where the pace of life was gentler, and when the things that mattered were not so transient and ephemeral as today. Leave Nimes for the day, and you can immerse yourself in the beautiful countryside of the region, find a small village to eat in, and uncover a charming world that is not so much trapped in the past as much as reinventing it.
