The city of Nantes is the main metropolitan centre of Western France. A major international city with a reputation as the home of France's navy (now moved down to the coast at St Nazaire), Nantes is a symbol of the thrusting business ideals of modern France. Everywhere you look in this city, people are hard at work thinking of new ways to make a bundle of cash, and feel good about spending it.

There are a number of beautiful buildings in and around Nantes, including several churches, and the famous Nantes Chateau - a classically impressive structure that dominates and indeed characterises the city centre architecture.

The large population of students (more than 40,000 across a number of institutions) means that Nantes is a very young town, and consequently, offers some exceptional nightlife for visitors. Check out the many bars and nightclubs around the central square in the evening, and you could easily be forgiven for thinking that you are in Ibiza. In Nantes it sometimes seems that pleasure is the most important currency in life, and everywhere you go, you find that people are concerned for your well-being, and do all they can to ensure that you are happy.

On hot days, the beaches on the Atlantic coast close to Nantes are pleasant, and offer the chance to surf or sunbathe depending on how active you feel.
