It is nigh on impossible to describe the capital of Monaco without lapsing into the usual clichés about glamour and fashion, describing the uniquely Monegasque way of life as being the preserve of the rich and famous, and falling into the trap of explaining how every time you leave your hotel in this peculiar city, you practically trip over Ferraris and Rolls Royce, how every person you meet is likely to be sporting a mixture of Prada and Designer plastic surgery, and how the air practically smells of money.
The truth of course is a little more mundane, Monte Carlo is a small and rather cramped city clinging onto the French Riviera, and absolutely covered in (often very ugly) blocks of flats. The weather is great throughout most of the year, but sadly, because of the nature of Monte Carlo, the city becomes unbearably hot in summer, and the locals decamp en masse to places where there is fresh air and a breeze. The attractions in Monaco include the annual Grand Prix, the collections of art in the gallery, and the famous Casino - once the main reason for visiting.
Monte Carlo is a curious place, with many flaws, but I'm assured that these are actually the reason for wanting to visit, and to the true connoisseur of class, the very things that make Monte Carlo so uncomfortable and cramped are an intrinsic part of its charm. Go figure!
