Carcassonne, the largest walled city in Europe lies on the banks of the Aude River in the foothills of the Pyrenees. One of the most impressive medieval cities in France, Carcassonne offers you the chance to explore the past in the form of well preserved ancient buildings with drawbridges dungeons and turrets.

The city has two centres on the left and right banks of the Aude. The Right Bank is where you find the oldest parts of the city, while on the left bank, many of the buildings date from Carcassonne's wealthy merchant period and include some large houses, a number of museums, and some lovely churches laid out along a simple to follow gridiron plan.

Carcassonne lies amid the beautiful scenery of the Languedoc region, which, with its rolling countryside and warm climate makes for the perfect location for a driving holiday and has many sights to see as you explore. Highlights of the region include the many small mountain villages such as the famous Rennes le Chateau, a number of resorts along the Golfe de Lion such as Perpignan and Narbonne, and no one who visits Carcassonne on a driving holiday should miss out on the chance to head south and into the ruggedly beautiful Pyrenees, where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and climbing amongst some of the most magical vistas imaginable.
