Lying at the centre of perhaps the most famous winemaking region on earth, Bordeaux is a stylish city combining the modern with the traditional, and boasts a superb location on the banks of the Garonne River a short distance from the Atlantic Coast.
Aside from the vineyards and wineries, which are understandably the most important attractions in the region, Bordeaux also offers the chance to see some pleasantly picturesque buildings nestled in the rolling countryside, and within the city itself - particularly in the old town, where you can see the famous merchants' houses along the Quai de la Douane (customs quay).
Predictably, the best, and most popular time to visit Bordeaux is during the month of October - immediately after the wine harvest, when the new vintage is revealed to the world at the centre of enormous media attention. If you visit in October, not only do you benefit from being able to sample the newest wine, you can also enjoy the countryside at its most beautiful when the leaves on the trees are golden, and the weather is gentle.
